Relief For Morning Neck Stiffness

How much do we wake up early in the morning with stiffness and neck pain? If you experience neck pain upon waking up, you’re not alone in that. This is one of several people’s several common complaints, but most people believe it’s just a symptom of ageing and coping with it. This is not real, however. With this neck pain and stiffness, you do not need to wake up every morning.

Choose the right pillow.

Our pillows are the most prevalent source of neck discomfort in the morning. Our necks are not adequately supported by most of the pillows. The neck of each is unique in terms of length, thickness and tension of the muscle. Here’s why a right pillow is important

This is because our necks need to be well supported in a neutral position to give our muscles a rest, while we sleep at night.

  • In case your pillow is too high, your neck will be in a flexed position, placing your muscles a fair degree of stretch, giving you an ache when you wake up in the morning.
  • Your neck is not supported when your pillow is too short, and the joints between your vertebrae in your neck contract each other, causing discomfort in the morning when you wake up.
  • Your muscles will work through the night to help stabilise your neck if your pillow is too soft. You will wake up the next morning with muscles that are tired and achy.

What if the stiffness and neck pain persists?

You have likely been suffering from this for a long time if the pain and stiffness remain. To get your muscles released and joints stabilised before you experience the relief, it would be helpful for you to pursue a few treatment sessions with a physiotherapist. Also, making a deliberate effort to control your posture during the day will help prevent the next morning from developing stiffness and discomfort. Your physiotherapist will also help you evaluate the condition and assess the underlying cause if you have not felt better by changing the pillows. Conditions such as pains in the neck are complex and may require more care than a change in the pillow alone.
